Dr. Alfred Kuehn is the founder of Management Science Associates, Inc., which he founded in 1963.
As a former professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Graduate School of Industrial Administration in the ‘60s, Dr. Kuehn recognized the importance that his research consulting practice held for the world of market research. Already a world-renowned expert in the field, he incorporated this practice and began to develop commercially available methodologies to quantify customer loyalty and retention using consumer purchase data. These innovative techniques, such as scanning products at the time of purchase to gather information on consumer spending habits, are the same ones used today by many customer analysis firms.
While serving as Chairman of MSA, Dr. Kuehn also worked to fill the demand for his expertise in marketing research. He co-authored three books, Quantitative Techniques in Marketing Analysis, Carnegie Tech Management Gameand Promotional Decisions Using Mathematical Models. He also authored and co-authored more than 50 articles in professional journals, books and conference proceedings covering such topics as: marketing, consumer and market behavior, mathematical model building, simulation, heuristic programming, learning models, brand shifting, advertising and promotional planning.
A graduate of Carnegie Mellon University, Dr. Kuehn holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Industrial Administration. He taught graduate level courses at 14 institutions including Carnegie Mellon University, Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of London. He also consulted with many major corporations, governmental agencies and marketing research and management consulting firms.
Dr. Kuehn’s stewardship of MSA has kept pace with his accomplishments. In the past 60 years, he acquired several companies, established subsidiary companies, and worked diligently to ensure that MSA reflects its customers growing needs for real business solutions that integrate information technology and analytics. Dr. Kuehn enjoyed flying planes for many years, has traveled throughout a majority of the world, is an avid reader and is constantly keeping up with what’s trending today.
