MSA - Information Technology Systems and Services

MSA views business continuity as more than a "safety net" for an organization. It's about the survivability of your business, without ever having to "shut down" operations. With this in mind, MSA offers a comprehensive portfolio of business continuity and disaster recovery services to keep an organization's key business processes running with minimal interruption. To support our business continuity and disaster recovery practice, we offer a network of secure, independent data center facilities throughout the Pittsburgh region, connected by an optical fiber network with employee workspace to benefit our clients.

Whether the goal is replicating a secure, reliable and scalable technology platform or providing off-site workspace, MSA's network of facilities and business continuity best practices are designed to help companies protect their data and their future.

Business Continuity: A Flexible Approach

MSA's business continuity and disaster recovery services and solutions are flexible, modular and can evolve as a client's business grows. Our recommended approach is an incremental approach, one that allows clients to build out their core infrastructure at one of MSA's data center facilities and evolve to an "active-active" business continuity solution over time:
  • Equipment ownership flexible: grow requirements with MSA
  • Fiber routes and management flexible: build out with MSA
  • Management of sites flexible: adapt to changing conditions
  • Space allocation timing flexible at multiple sites: grow over time
The benefit of this incremental approach is that it reduces the initial cost of implementing a DR strategy, as well as the risks. Once the initial infrastructure is in place, clients can phase in additional systems as they become more critical and phase out legacy systems as new ones come in.

Multiple Local Facilities for Disaster Recovery

MSA offers alternate sites with equipment and resources to enable an organization to restore critical business functions. Specifically, we have four Pittsburgh-area sites connected by high bandwidth optical fiber for use as data processing sites and three sites for DR workspace. MSA's investment in these facilities provides clients with the added capability to distribute computing functions across multiple sites to maximize cost-effectiveness and to minimize the risk of shutdowns.

RockPointe is MSA's premier data center with 20,000 sq. ft. of raised floor space for basic processing, hosting, outsourcing and disaster recovery. Additional features include the following:
  • Redundant power (UPS, two back up generators)
  • 24 X 365 Command Center
  • Multiple communications providers
  • State-of-the-art security system
  • FM-200 fire suppression system
  • Video conferencing capabilities
  • 100+ professional IT staff
Work Space

In the event of a disaster, MSA can provide up to 7,500 fully-equipped workstations at several locations throughout the northeastern United States. Each workstation has a PC with network connections and a telephone. Clients whose employees are assigned to a designated off-site workspace may also have the use of a printer, copier and fax machine, as well as available conference rooms, so that they can quickly resume business operations.

Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity (DR/BC) Planning

Planning for disaster recovery/business continuity is a multi-step process, beginning with risk assessment and business impact analysis, and followed by the development of emergency response guidelines, recovery strategies and the DR/BC plan itself. The process concludes with the possible selection of an alternate recovery center, implementation and testing of the DR/BC plan, and company-wide awareness and training.

Driven by the need to ensure the timely recovery of critical business functions following a disaster, the process is understandably broad in scope - perhaps too broad for the resources of one's own IT organization. Here's where MSA can help.

MSA's in-house disaster recovery/business continuity experts will work with you to complete your DR/BC process, whatever its maturity level. Let us assist you with one step or multiple steps. Our unique approach is flexible and scalable, tailored to your needs. The objective is to get the plan done and feel more confident about facing the future prepared.

Data Center Outsourcing

MSA provides companies with secure data center space so that they can locate mission critical systems in an off-site facility. In this scenario, customers own their own servers and hardware and rent space, power and bandwidth. The benefits of data center outsourcing include reduced internal infrastructure costs, improved communications and reduced risk.

In addition, experienced technical personnel are available 24 x 365 to ensure that clients' equipment remains operational. Clients gain increased technical capabilities at a fraction of the cost of hiring a single employee and 24 x 365 operational support provides peace of mind.

Added Value

Contracting with MSA for BC/DR services provides a number of other economic benefits:

"Close, yet far enough away"

MSA's RockPointe facility is within 25 miles of downtown Pittsburgh. Our close proximity to regional businesses presents an opportunity for faster recovery and significant cost savings, due to the fact that employees can drive from home to RockPointe each day, avoiding the costs of airfare and hotel accommodations.

Our close proximity also offers greater flexibility in utilizing RockPointe for production purposes or in failing over in response to any downtime situation.

MSA's southwestern Pennsylvania location at RockPointe also provides a secure and easily accessible option for most east coast businesses. Operating from Pittsburgh as a hub, MSA is able to deliver a disaster recovery solution that offers strategic advantages and substantial cost savings over other east coast disaster recovery centers, such as
  • More reliable data replication options
  • Lower telecommunication costs
  • Less risk of travel interruptions and delays
  • Reduced travel time and costs
  • Increased productivity and faster recovery
Reliable, cost-effective data communication network

MSA offers multiple options, including access to our nationwide fiber network, to lessen dependency on current communication networks.

This experience has provided the foundation for our emergence into the Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) area as a stand-alone business. We are organized for innovation and have developed technology solutions in collaboration with Fortune 500 companies, research firms, educational institutions, medical clinics, cable TV networks, metals companies, scrap processors, and other process manufacturers.
